Just over 40 years ago America and Vietnam were locked in struggle which led to the death of over 3 million Vietnamese and over 58 thousands causality on the American side. The war between America and Vietnam was brutal and controversial. However it seems the relationship status has changed and America is now selling weapons to her old Enemy according to Yahoo news.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters “the U.S. will now allow sales of lethal maritime security capabilities and for surveillance on a case-by-case basis.”
This new development will not go down very well with China, which considers the entire South China Sea as its domain. This new development is certainly going to hit all the wrong cords in America China relationship. US Secretary of State John Kerry met Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh ahead of a working lunch on October 2, 2014 at the State Department in Washington were the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister expressed his concern about China.
In a statement the Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minhsaid “If we do not buy weapons from the United States, we (would) still buy from other countries,” while speaking at the Asia Society in New York. He also said “Why should China bother about that?”
This is a clear indication of a new chapter of cooperation between these old adversaries and it is clear all this is happening due to China’s unbridled appetite to control South China Sea and have absolute influence over the region which is not going down very well with its neighbors. Also there is a long history of mutual dislike between Vietnam and China which dates back for many years.
