Obama Grants One Billion Dollars to Pakistan

President Barack Obama has signed a massive annual defense policy bill which grants $1 billion to Pakistan according to latest report from Press Trust of India. This money is for the expenses made by Pakistan’s army in support of the US military operations in war-torn Afghanistan. This money has been appropriated to Pakistan under the National Defense Authorization Act for the fiscal year 2015, which the President signed on Friday. It sets overall defense spending at $578 billion with provision for release of Coalition Support Fund amounting to $1 billion to Pakistan.

This is not deemed as a military aid but a case of simple reimbursement for the Pakistan Military for its logistical support in the fight against terrorism and the US military operations in Afghanistan. Under the provision of providing this money, America had asked Pakistan to take action against the Haqqani Network which many believe is a strategic resource for the Pakistan army. But even after giving this money to Pakistan the lack of action and resolve to go after the Afghan Taliban which they consider as an alternative once the American forces leaves is a very contentious issue.

The Haqqani Network still operates with disdain in the lawless North Waziristan region but with the attack on the school children in Peshawar which led to the death of 132 school children carried out by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) might just change the outlook and attitude of the Pak Army and maybe they will stop distinguishing between good terrorists and bad terrorists.
