A controversial film about the men who assassinated Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 31st October 1984 is all set to release in Punjab this Friday according to NDTV. The film is titled “Kaum de Heere (Diamonds of the Community)” is about Satwant Singh and Beant Singh who were the bodyguards of Indira Gandhi who shot her because of operation Blue Star which led to the destruction of Golden Temple, the most revered holy place for Sikhs.
Already they have been called martyrs by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee which clearly means that their actions were justified. This film is already causing headache to Modi Government and the congress party is up in arms and wants the film banned from screening in any film theaters.
The Punjab government is under a terrible predicament but now has passed the buck to the Censor Board of India to decide on the film’s release. This is a double edge political blade and the ruling party the BJP which is the ally of the current Punjab government must be in a tremendous fix. Supporting the release of this film will be seen as a seal of approval for the killers and supporting ban of this film will cause problem for the Badal led government. It seems Mr Modi will be involved in some serious domestic politics before he leaves for Japan end of this month.
