RECONVERSION IN ALIGARH

Reports of 72 people renouncing Christianity and embracing Hinduism in the town of Aligarh which is not far from the Capital New Delhi as been reported by Times of India. Back in 1995 people from the Valmiki community converted to Christianity and now they have reportedly back to their Hindu fold. Converting to other religions are a common trends these days, Kerala and other southern states are known for such thingy. But reconversion is rare.

There is a Hindu group called Dharam Jagran Vivad which is being led by Khem Chandra has taken the responsibility for this development and he said “This is called ghar wapasi (Home Coming), not conversion. They left by choice and today they have realized their mistake and want to come back. We welcome them. We can’t let our samaj scatter; we have to hold it tight. I have told them that honor comes from within the community and not from outside.”

This news has not gone too well with the Christian leaders of this area because not only people have renounced Christianity but also the church is now a temple. Mr. Osmond Charles, a lawyer and community leader in Aligarh, was quoted by TOI, where he said “Ghar wapasi sounds like a conspiracy.”They were not converted into Hinduism, but were reconverted. The reason they moved to Christianity was the way were treated in Indian society, but they noticed no change in the behavior. The people who had converted them I Christianity were gone and no one ever came to know their whereabouts. They finally thought, they were happy as a Hindu. In 17 years, they have seen it all. Now they want to live a peaceful live following Hindu traditions.
