THE STRIKE CONTINUES!

As the second phase of odd-even rolled out in Delhi, a section of auto and taxi unions called for a single-day strike on Monday to protest against the App-based Cab services i.e. Ola and Uber. This was a move that the commuters knew would cause them trouble traveling in the national capital, but little did they know, the move was going to get extended to a second day strike.

The General Secretary of both and ‘Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh’ and ‘Delhi Pradesh Taxi Unions’ Rajendra Soni stated, no autos or taxis will function to ground their protest against the app-based cabs, since even their demand for 10,000 new permits of Autorickshaw’s has not been issued since their cancellation after the alleged irregularities in their distribution. He said that they demand to stop app-based cabs because they are “snatching” away their livelihood. According to Joint Action Committee of 20 transport unions, the auto and taxi (yellow-black) unions of domestic and international airports have extended their support by participating in the strike. It’s perhaps the first time city’s rival taxi unions, affiliated to major political parties including BJP and Congress, have come together and given a call for a strike.

As the protesters intend to continue the strike as indefinite, it is going to be a huge problem for the daily commuters as there are altogether 85,000 auto-rickshaw and 15,000 yellow-black taxis in the Capital and imagine them going off-road, the city will almost be empty. The protesters have staged the strike at the New Delhi Railway Station.

It didn’t take long to turn this strike into a political issue. As thousands of autos and taxis went off the roads for the second consecutive day, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal attacked on the Lt Governor Najeeb Jung yesterday accusing him of supporting the BJP to cripple Delhi. Even Transport Minister Satyender Jain has questioned on the inaction of Delhi Police alleging them to be supporting the BJP goons who stopped autos and passenger vehicles from plying. To the tweet that CM Arvind Kejriwal made a BJP lawmaker Manoj Tiwari responded in a tweet which said that AAP should stop the blame game with BJP and to look into their own government and stop blaming BJP for everything. At some places yesterday it was also observed that the protesters were forcibly trying to enforce the strike. To top it off it it rained in Delhi and well caused much flooding in many places. Those who commute daily and visiting the Capitol had a harrowing time due to the sprain on the public transport system.

As the strikes continues today the agitators have clearly warned that they have determined to carry out an indefinite strike until the government takes any strict action against app-based cab services. There hasn’t been any response on the part of the app-based cab services but we’ll have to wait and see how today turns out to be.
