According to latest from Times of India, many Parliamentarians from both the ruling and opposition are aghast that cash handouts to people in Pakistan. According to Belfast Telegraph Pakistan is “a country that has its own nuclear weapons and space programs. Also, the daily mail a leading newspaper in the United Kingdom has reported that “£300 million of British taxpayers’ money is being handed out to Pakistanis on pre-loaded cash cards as part of a scheme critics say is rife with corruption.”
Also, UK is planning to increase its aid to Pakistan by a further £105 million, when there is a serious social crisis in the nuclear-armed country. Also, Pakistan has spent nearly £4 billion to buy eight new submarines when there is more than eighteen hours power cuts its people have to endure. But the real concern facing many British Parliamentarians is that right now their own nation is going through a financial crisis and there have already too many cuts backs in social care in Britain itself.
The UK Independent Party’s (UKIP) Lisa Duffy was quoted as saying by the Belfast Telegraph “Surely common sense tells us that giving cash handouts in a country that has its own nuclear weapons and space programs is simply wrong. Our own UK taxpayers are facing more and more cuts on a daily basis whilst we are providing benefits to the citizens of Pakistan.”
MP Nigel Evans who’s a member of the member of the International Development Select Committee went a little further and said ‘clearly open to fraud and normally this sort of aid is only given in a crisis or emergency when it is the only way to give help. It only should be a temporary measure, but it seems like we’re exporting the dole to Pakistan, which is clearly not a clever idea.”
There is sufficient evidence that the money is not reaching its target under the Benazir Income Support Programme because the poorest families in Pakistan who are withdrawing money with cashpoint cards actually are paying kickbacks to officials.
