ASUS ZENFONE 5 – ANOTHER BUDGET ATTACKER

Currently, the budget segment of the smartphone market in India is ruled by domestic vendors like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava. However, lately international phonemakers like Samsung and Motorola have been trying to keep up with the trend of launching pocket-friendly, entry level smartphones. Asus, a Taiwan-based company has made quite an appearance in the Indian phone market by launching three handsets this year – Asus ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6.

Both the ZenFone 4 and ZenFone 5 are priced below 10,000INR. The company has managed to turn heads around with its aggressive pricing; however, what remains to be seen is whether the low pricing actually stirs up sales for the brand.

Appearance and Feel

There is nothing very unusual about the ZenFone 5. At a glance, it comes off as a basic candybar phone. Sleek body, round edges contribute to the basic yet modern design. The phone is well built just like any other popular Asus product.

The boxy design of the Asus ZenFone 5 makes it look and feel like a high-end phone. The phone feels sturdy and strong in the hands and at 148.2 x 72.8 x 10.34 mm fits snugly too making it easy to use with one hand. Asus ZenFone 5 will be available in India in five colors – Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, Sky Blue and Solar Yellow.

Featuring a 5 inch display on the front, Asus ZenFone 5 sports a concentric circle finish just below the display which is very similar to Asus ZenBook laptops. Above the display are a 2 megapixel front cam, a notification LED and the sensor array. The right edge of the phone is adorned with metallic looking power button and volume rockers which are placed just rightly to access easily. The visibly curved rear houses an 8 megapixel autofocus primary snapper and minimalistic ZenFone and Intel Inside branding.

Specs, Performance and Features

The Asus ZenFone 5 is powered by a dual core Intel Atom Z2560 processor clocked at 1.6GHz with Hyper-Threading technology. The Hyper-Threading technology, Intel claims, enable the each core to execute two instructions at a time.

Another version of the ZenFone 5 was revealed at the Computex Show this year. The ZenFone 5 LTE runs on a 1.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with integrated LTE support.

The ZenFone 5’s processor is mated to 2GB of RAM and comes in two models – one with 8GB of internal storage and another 16GB of it. Both the models can support microSD cards up to 64GB of capacity. The smartphone is backed up by a 2,110 mAh battery which is pretty good in the segment.

The Asus ZenFone 5 sports a 5 inch IPS HD display (720×1080 pixels) with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. An impressive pixel density of 294 ppi makes text and images appear crisp and clear. Viewing angles are great.

The device runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, with a ZenUI skin from the company. The brand has promised an Android 4.4 KitKat update though.

Priced at Rs. 9,999 Asus ZenFone 5 takes over Moto G, its major competitor, by its larger screen and expandable storage!
