MICROMAX CANVAS WIN W092: WP8.1 IN BUDGET SEGMENT

Since people have stopped stereotyping smartphones to Android and iPhones do not really come as economical, Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has been getting quite some attention in the phone world. A conference held by Microsoft gave us names of the new hardware partners for the WP platform and one of the Indian names on the list the Canvas-fame Micromax. Recently, Micromax announced a Windows Phone 8.1 handset – Canvas Win W092 in the lower-end segment. Priced at 6,500 INR, the Win W092 is expected to bring a similar success to the brand as rest of the Canvas series has done.

The new Canvas Win W092 takes quite a lot of design cues from the sub-Rs. 10,000 Android smartphone series of the brand. The fascia of the phone doesn’t look any different. However, the plastic monoblock body of the Win W092 manages to grab your attention. Encased in a transparent casing, the entire rear and the edges of the phone look crystallized, much like the Nokia Asha series.

Just like the rest of the Canvas series, the phone sports no brand logo on the front. Talking about the façade, while flanking on the top is a 0.3MP snapper, bordering the bottom of the screen are three capacitive navigation keys. Mild branding can be seen on the back panel of the phone. A 5MP rear camera with LED flash sits just above the signature fist logo of the brand on the rear panel. A volume rocker resides on the left edge of the handset, while the power button finds its way to the right edge. There are no ports on the bottom, instead the Micro-USB port and headphone jack are both found on the top edge of the phone. Unlike most of the Windows Phones you know, W092 comes with a removable rear panel and battery.

Canvas W092 fires up with a 4-inch WVGA IPS display and a resolution of 480×800 pixels! The lowly resolution of the phone comes out as a major setback. The images and text on the screen are nothing close to sharp. While the brand claims 16M colors, the color accuracy fails to impress. The phone sports a capacitive touch screen and responds quickly.

The Canvas Win W092 is equipped with a 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor mated to 1GB RAM. An internal memory of 8 GB and expandable memory up to 32 GB is perfect in its segment. Windows Phone OS has always been loved for its low power consumption. The Windows Phone 8.1 is just as little power hungry. Launching of apps, switching between applications and browsing on W092 is remarkably smooth. There is no lag whatsoever. The OS also greets with the much talked about additions like the Action Centre, Word Flow keyboard and an optional third column of tiles.

Canvas Win W092 will face serious battle against handsets like Moto E and Sony Xperia E1 which are probably better than it in every sense. However, for customers who wouldn’t settle for any other OS but WP8.1, this phone proves to be an extremely economical option.
