MICROMAX CANVAS WIN W121: A TOUGH COMPETITOR

There has been a clear increment in the number of Windows Phone OS users lately. Every since Microsoft took charge of the only established Windows Phone brand Nokia, there hasn’t really been an actually competitor in the market for Windows Phone smartphones. But that is old news. Merely two months after Micromax was announced as one of the hardware partners for Microsoft’s WP platform, the much loved Indian phone maker declared two Windows Phone 8.1 handsets – Canvas Win W092 and Canvas Win W121. The latter being seen as a direct opponent to the likes of Nokia Lumia 630 Dual-SIM!  Priced at 9,500 INR, the Canvas Win W121 comes through as a potential package in the budget segment.

Unlike the rest of the Canvas series, the Win W121 is a better crafted phone sporting a slim chassis and a faux-leather rear panel. However, the phone feels like a lot of plastic to be held at once. Still, compared to the other Win model, Win121 sits ahead with more style. Sporting a 5-inch HD IPS 720×1280 pixels display, the Win W121 offers a decent video playback and gaming experience. Since the phone boasts a far better display than the Nokia Lumia 630 Dual-SIM, it is expected to score more in the not-so-brand-conscious market. Apart from the 5-inch display, the front of the phone gets three capacitive Windows Phone navigation buttons – Back, Start and Search. On the top reside a front cam and proximity and ambient light sensors. Volume rockers are on the left while the power button’s on the right.

Equipped with a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, the Win W121 has a 1 GB RAM. Another 8GB of internal memory and up to 32 GB expandable memory complete the system. Operating on the latest version of the Windows Phone OS, the Win W121 work exceptionally fast even with the Snapdragon 200 chipset. Reason being, the not at all power hungry WP8.1. No lag is experienced in launching apps or browsing the internet using the Internet Explorer 11.

The new OS greets the user with some remarkable additions which make Windows Phone experience more complete than ever. The Action Centre lets you swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal an overlay which shows all the notifications along with four handy shortcuts viz. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Camera and Brightness. You can now have your home screen customized with three columns of tiles. Another noticeable add-on is the Word-Flow keyboard, a take on the Swype style keyboard seen in Android smartphones.

Canvas Win W121 sports an 8MP rear snapper and a 2MP front cam. While a little underexposure can be seen in the images, the rest of the camera quality is decent.

The Micromax Canvas Win W121 is priced below the Lumia 630 and yet is far ahead of it when it comes to specs and performance. As a matter of fact, Micromax hasn’t cut corners while developing the W121 and the consequence would be a tough battle the Canvas Win W121 is capable to give, not only to the 630 but to the likes of Lumia 525 and Nokia XL Dual SIM.
