MOTO E – BUDGET SEGMENT OWNED

Pretty confident about its strategy and pricing, Motorola launched two smartphones – Moto G and Moto X this year. Both of them offering features, we did not expect for their price! The new Moto E is no different. Priced at 6,999 INR, the Moto E is a head turner. Perhaps Motorola is here to change the stereotype of pricing the smartphones more on the basis of the brand name rather than the features. The earlier two phones and the newly launched Moto E is a clear signal to the buyers that they are entitle to so much more for the money they have been paying for smartphones till now. While there has been no traditional retail sale of the smartphone, the first stock of Moto E was done with within 2 days on Flipkart.

A little heavy on the hand, the Moto E weighs 142 g and is a tad bit fatter than the cousin Moto G. However, a compact chassis makes up for the increased weight. Despite being plasticky, the Moto E looks exceptionally classy and quite premium for its price. The rubbery rear panel is something to complain about. Interestingly, the rear case can be switched between nine different colors, all of which combine to a form a rather pretty palette.

The rear of the phone sports a unique dimple custom made to protect the rear camera lens from scratching. Other than that, a minimalistic logo finds its place on the back panel. The front panel sports ambient light and proximity sensors and a concealed charging indicator LED. There are no hard navigation keys. The volume rockers and power button both dwell on the right edge.

A 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor with integrated Adreno 302 graphics is what powers the new Moto E. Presence of 1GB RAM ensures no lagging. Moto E comes with 4GB of in built memory out of which 2.2GB is available for use. Memory can be expanded up to 32GB.

Moto E features a 5MP rear snapper with no auto-focus or flash and there is no front camera for selfie lovers.

A 4.3 inch display boasts Corning Gorilla Glass 3 – first time for a smartphone in this segment. qHD resolution of 960×540 pixels offers crisp imaging and vivid colors along with decent viewing angles.

Moto E  operates on Android 4.4.2 KitKat which is extremely impressive for this makes Moto E first Android smartphone in its price range to do so. A pure KitKat experience follows as Motorola leaves the software mostly intact. Also, the phone manages to perform remarkably smooth and doesn’t show any major lag while browsing though web pages or apps. However, a battery rated at 1,980 mAh runs out quickly.

For a sub-10k range, Motorola has managed to launch a performance behemoth. While the camera in the phone disappoints, rest of the features excel! The only smartphone capable of withstanding this beast in this price range is the Lumia 525, which costs more and offers limited apps as compared to the Moto E.
