TEN EASY WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY THIS MONSOON

Thank God! The monsoon has finally reached almost every corner of our country, bringing the de rigueur showers to us. Everyone is happily bidding farewell to the unbearable summer heat. No more rashes, no more dehydration and no more need to avoid those wonderful day picnics. But monsoon, along with this air of happiness, also brings some obligatory measures which we should always follow to avoid some serious health problems. These precautions are not hard to keep up to and surely pay well in the long run.

  1. The Weatherman is your best friend this season

It really helps to check the day’s weather before stepping out of your house, especially on a cloudy day. You can arm yourself with an umbrella or a rain-coat if the stated probability of precipitation looks pretty high. You surely don’t want to see yourself, in your well-ironed clothes, dripping wet and catching cold. The easiest way that I find to this is to just Google the name of your city followed by the word “weather” and you will get a detailed weather report. Indeed, Google again saves the day.

  1.  Boost your immunity. Let your body produce its own medication

Our immunity is highly affected in rainy season, due to the high fluctuation in atmospheric temperature. With that I mean to say that the ability of our body to produce anti-toxins against various strains of bacteria and virus goes down, leading to us falling sick commonly in this weather. So, take care of that by eating foods richer in vitamins (especially vitamin B) and minerals.

  1. Don’t let your body run out of water

The most common mistake that people do in this season is forgetting the direst need of human body, which is drinking enough water. It becomes hard for our bodies to retain water in heavy humid conditions. This leads a sharp rise in the reports of severe dehydration cases during this part of the year. Making a strict rule drinking at least 4-5 litres of water per day really helps.

  1.  Sweat those toxins out

Even if you have a strong sense of personal hygiene and cleanliness, still you cannot stop all the toxins, present in the air you breathe or in the water use for drinking or in your eatables, from entering your body. Our body eliminated these toxins through its excretory system but sometimes this takes enough times for you to catch infections. So the best way to flush these toxins is to sweat them out through rigorous and consistent exercise. If you can’t find time for an ideal workout routine, then you can just start with jogging in your neighborhood. All you need is to keep your respiratory system clean through this.

Embrace: Foods rich in antioxidants; Make a habit of washing all your fruits and vegetables well; go for soups when it gets colder; a cup of green tea everyday will do wonders for your immunity.

Avoid: Street food; anything stale; anything undercooked; too oily or junk food, fizzy drinks (as it dehydrates you)

  1. Lighter Meals, Enough sleep

High humidity curbs the metabolic abilities of our body, often leading to indigestion and other gastric problems. So don’t overburden your digestive system with a lot of food. Eat frequent and light meals and take enough sleep as well. Sleep deprivation messes up with your biological clock that can lead to a loss of appetite and you may also fall sick.

  1. Beware the mosquitoes!

Don’t let stagnant water accumulate in or around your house as these places, like fridge bottoms, coolers or outside lying buckets, are the favorite ones for mosquitoes to breed, and spread diseases like malaria and dengue. Also, try to bring mosquito nets or mosquito-repellent cream or vaporizer into your everyday use.

  1. Make a habit of washing your hands after coming back home and before taking your meals

I don’t want to overstate this fact, though still I have to, that almost all public places that attract major crowds are contaminated with infection-causing germs. So, if possible, one should always carry a pet bottle of a good hand-sanitizer with oneself and use it before taking any meal.

  1. Hey, watch out for that puddle!

Do avoid your feet from falling in those water puddles on the street while taking a stroll, as they are heavily contaminated with impurities and bacteria. Even if, you accidently get into one, then wash your feet with soap as soon as possible. Not doing this can lead to you catching cold or some infection.

  1. Stop those painful eye and ear infections

Ear Care : If you are in the habit of scratching in or around your ears with anything you get your hands on like pens, keys or even unpacked cotton buds, then you really need to stop doing that because during rainy weather fungus breeds almost everywhere and hence you can catch a painful ear infection. To avoid this, one more thing you can do, is to try your best to keep your skin dry, especially your underarms and private parts. Also keep your laundry clean. A feeling of soreness in the throat and running nose indicate a bad ear infection.

Eye Care: Conjunctivitis becomes quite common, specifically in children, during the rainy season. It is so because of the moisture in the atmosphere during rainy season that mediates infections even through air. Try to avoid using anyone else’s handkerchief or towel to wipe your face. Use anti-bacterial eye drops if you feel a persistent itching or pain in your eye for more than a day. That would control the infection and will stop it from spreading to the other eye.
